Freddy Garcia returns

Another piece from the 2005 World Series championship squad has been brought back by the White Sox, and the team only can hope Freddy Garcia ultimately will be as successful as Scott Podsednik has been.

A White Sox source confirmed that Garcia was signed to a Minor League deal and will report to extended Spring Training in Arizona. Garcia, a close friend of manager Ozzie Guillen, was released by the New York Mets back in April and has been bothered by shoulder problems over the last two years. Garcia was sent to the Phillies after the 2006 season in a trade that brought Gavin Floyd to Chicago, but posted a 1-5 record with a 5.90 ERA in 2007 for Philadelphia before being shut down.

Garcia, who turns 34 on Wednesday, finished with a 1-1 record and 4.20 ERA over three starts for Detroit in 2008. He has a 118-77 career record.

In other player personnel moves, Wes Whisler was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte in between games in order to make room for Jose Contreras.

The White Sox continuously prove just how interesting a franchise they really are. Freddy Garcia hasn’t proven one bit of worth the past 2-3 seasons, thus not even making it out of Triple-A before being released by the Mets. A team desperate for any kind of pitching help, made a move. Obviously Garcia and Guillen are very close, so I can see the logic in the signing … but I wish I was friends w/ the SOX too. My arm has been junk for quite some time – maybe I can get job in Charlotte! It was great to see Contreras pitch so well today and get a split of the double-header today. GO SOX!🙂

His friendship with Ozzie didn’t prevent the trade for Floyd, so I doubt if it has anything to do with resigning him. Frankly, I’m happy to see Freddie back and I hope things work out. If he doesn’t make it through training, then he won’t make the team, but he deserves a chance to prove himself. It a shame that he’s having a hard time coming back after that surgey because he was one heck of a pitcher. If they have to bring back the 2005 team, then so be it…….whatever it takes to win is OK with me. Pods has brought some fire to this team and I hope they find a way to keep him. And yes, Contreras pitched very well…….didn’t look like the same guy pre AAA. He’s got a good attitude……he’ll do whatever it takes to help his team. It was his idea to go to Charlotte …… how many guys are going to volunteer to do that to help their team ? I still have faith in this team. It’s a good blend of the young and veterans, but right now the veterans are looking much better than the youngsters.

Aaron Rowand is our next visit to the woodpile. Bring back Aaron.
